Show 2012

Our 31st annual summer show will be held on Saturday 4th August 2012.

The Show Schedule (pdf 975Kb) and Entry Forms (pdf 280Kb) can be downloaded here.

A few new classes have been introduced this year; sweet peas (vase), collection of fruit (3 or more varieties), and the longest runner bean.

Subjects for the photography section will be ‘A Feature of Your Garden’  and ‘Signs of  Ageing’ (gnarled trees, old tools, crumbled walls, etc) and for the children ‘A Special Feature of Your Garden’.

The best scarecrow and the best hanging basket will be judged in situ on 14th July and 28th July respectively.

Summer Show 2012

Show 2011

Show day on 6th August saw a steady flow of over 200 visitors coming along to the Village Hall to view the high standard of entries at the 30th annual Flower Show.  Despite missing a few regular exhibitors this year there were 350 entries, which is an increase of 30 on last years figure.

It was wonderful to see a good number of new exhibitors.  Many of them, very happy with their successes and the good atmosphere of the day, say they look forward to returning next year.  Unfortunately, despite our efforts at increased promotion the number of entries in the children’s section was disappointing.

All the judges were impressed with the quality of exhibits despite the weather which every year seems to provide a different challenge.  This year the hot dry spring brought some things on early, but the summer had not seen sufficient sunshine to ripen some produce in time for the show.  Once again a torrential downpour 3 days before the show left some exhibitors needing to find substitutes for their prize blooms.

Jo Reed from Leavenheath, with 56 points, won the Creems Cup for the highest number of points in the show.  In second place was last year’s winner Hazel Gardiner on 33 points and close on his mother’s heels was Tom Gardiner on 29 points.

This is the first year the RHS Banksian Medal, for the highest number of points gained in horticultural classes, has been awarded and it went to Jo Reed on 37 points.  Jenny Smith gained 22 points and Hazel Gardiner 18 points.

The new competitions for best scarecrow and best hanging basket received some creative entries. The Gladwell family’s ‘Mr and Mrs Scarecrow’ was the winning entry, with Trevor Smy and Tom Gardiner second and third.  Leo Baker won the hanging basket competition, with Jenny Smith second and Helen Gladwell third.

Prizes were presented to the winners of the Parish Council’s best kept allotments competition, which was won by Stephen Osborne (although the plot was worked by Tom Gardiner and Jackie Grant), with Trevor Smy second and Hazel Gardiner third.

Terry Bannister very kindly came along to present the trophies.  Our thanks go to Terry and to all of our judges for returning once again.  We are also grateful to all those who helped set up and dismantle the displays, Hazel Gardiner and Denise Drury for providing the teas, Anne Spencer, Sheila Sessions and Pauline Horrell for manning the door and produce stall, Mick Bond for running the raffle, the committee for their organisation skills and of course all the entrants who take the time and effort to take part and those coming along to support the show.
